C. Versicolor Tarantula

C. Versicolor Tarantula

0.5" Sling

The Caribena versicolor, commonly known as the Antilles Pinktoe or Martinique Red Tree Spider, is widely considered one of the most stunning tarantulas in the hobby due to its dramatic color transformation. Spiderlings hatch with a vibrant, metallic blue hue, but as they mature into adults, they develop a metallic green carapace, a reddish-orange abdomen, and distinct pink "toes" on their legs. Native to the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, this arboreal species is generally docile but can be fast and skittish, preferring to jump or flee rather than bite when threatened.

Success with this species relies heavily on providing a vertical enclosure that mimics its natural tree-dwelling habitat, allowing it to construct intricate funnel webs against cork bark or branches. Unlike many other tarantulas, the Pinktoe requires a delicate balance of high humidity and substantial cross-ventilation; stagnant, soggy air is a primary cause of health issues and mortality, so airflow must be prioritized alongside moisture.

  • Housing: Tall arboreal enclosure (12"+ height) with cork bark or branches for climbing and webbing.
  • Temperature & Humidity: 75°F–82°F with 70%–80% humidity; mist one side of the enclosure lightly to provide drinking droplets and moisture, but ensure it dries out slightly between mistings to prevent mold.
  • Diet: Spiderlings eat flightless fruit flies; adults eat crickets and roaches.
  • Lifespan: Males live 3–4 years, while females can live 12–15 years.
