Fire Red Millipedes
Fire Red Millipedes are tropical detritivores that thrive in a warm, humid environment with plenty of decomposing organic matter. House them in a secure, well‑ventilated enclosure with a deep, moist substrate made from a mix of organic topsoil, coconut fiber, and plenty of leaf litter and rotten wood. Aim to keep humidity high (around 70–85%) by misting regularly, but avoid waterlogging the substrate. Provide lots of hiding spots with cork bark, leaves, and curved pieces of wood so they can burrow and feel secure.
They do best at temperatures around 72–78°F, kept away from direct sunlight and drafts. In addition to the leaf litter and decaying wood they naturally graze on, offer supplemental foods like slices of cucumber, squash, sweet potato, carrot, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone. Remove uneaten fresh food before it molds, and avoid handling them roughly, as their bodies are delicate and can be injured by drops or squeezing. Always wash your hands after handling, and observe new arrivals closely for the first week to be sure they’re active, eating, and adjusting well.
